An Introduction to the Fort Simpson Historical Society.
The Fort Simpson Historical Society first met in 1990, in part to help protect and preserve these old buildings. There has been support and encouragement from Heritage Canada, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife, the local Councils of the First Nation, the Metis Nation and the Village of Fort Simpson.
Since 1990, some of the Society's initiatives include:
1. Help with writing a walking tour guide for visitors
2. Responsibility for Albert Faille's Cabin (ca.1920), including some extensive repairs.
3. With help from Yellowknife, a Community Heritage Assessment Study.
4. Participation in naming the new Liard River ferry, the LAFFERTY.
5. In January 1998, the Society purchased two lots of the original Hudson's Bay Company claim with the goal of creating a HERITAGE PARK.
This Heritage Park will provide the infrastructure to collect, preserve, research and document the cultural history of both the Dene and European peoples. Local people will benefit by gaining a better understanding of and a mutual respect for both traditions. Visitors to the community will also experience a "slice" of northern history.
The Fort Simpson Historical Society is a non-profit charitable organization which is open to everyone. Its aims, as set out in its governing document are:
to collect, preserve, enhance and protect historical buildings and sites, artifacts and other memorabilia; to preserve and protect oral history, traditional trails, knowledge of local land sage, and panorama deemed to have traditional cultural value, all as identified by members of the Fort Simpson Historical Society.
